“All the romance of the South Seas, with none of a desert island’s hardships.” Was how advertisements described Nyali beach hotel in the early day’s promise, which it still fulfills". The word Nyali means “a clearing”. Its original name was Nyali kuu Which means – a great clearing named for its location which seats on a great sandy beach clearing. Nyali Beach Hotel was Mombasa, Kenya's fisrt beach hotel on the mainland. Founded by John and Eva Noon it opened in December 1946 with 61 rooms and fully furnished cottages. Today, extensions and improvements over the years have resulted in a hotel of 170 air-conditioned bedrooms and 4 Executive suites.

Nyali Beach soon gained a reputation for first class hospitality and excellence, which it endures to this day. Set amid 20 acres of flamboyant tropical gardens, the hotel has been extensively refurbished and modernized while still retaining its period charm. Your first impression is of cool, whitewashed walls and tiled floors. There are ceiling fans, potted palms, and stately marble and wicker furniture.The atmosphere is laid back and comfortable and the ambience very Casablanca. Five restaurants to suit all tastes and appetites. The cuisine varies from gourmet offerings of the beachside Mvita Grill to lighter meals and snacks at Parrot's beach bar. There's a modern disco where the resident DJ plays the latest hits as well as the best golden oldies. An independently managed Casino on the property has a slot machine arcade. Opens daily from 9.00pm for American roulette, Black Jack and Pontoon. The casino's Joker Bar provides a full service to players and watchers. There are two large swimming pools and an outdoor Jacuzzi, wind surfing deep sea fishing and catamaran sailing. In addition there are 2 floodlit tennis courts (equipment for hire) beach volleyball, indoor games,table tennis and darts. Squash and golf can be played at Nyali Golf and Country Club about 2.5kms from the hotel. Football, nature trail walks and visits to a Crocodile Farm can be arranged.

The hotel has 2 large free-form swimming pools and a Jacuzzi with pulsing warm-water jets. Water Sports include Catamaran, Windsurfing, pedaloes, boogie boards and 2 scuba-diving lessons for beginners are offered free. Other water sports include diving trips and deep-sea fishing.

The Nyali Course is 18 holes with a Par of 71 and 5.5.5 of 72. It is a real championship layout with impeccable Greens and some testing short rough. There are five par threes all having a degree of chance for the badly hit shot. Monsoon winds at different times of the year can be a help or a hinderance making an easy par four almost difficult par five for the high handicap golfer. The par 71 Nyali Golf Course is situated just 5 minutes drive from the Hotel. Guests can play at this impeccable championship course at only US $ 30 daily supplement.
